plant sharing

Ideas for the Pittsburgh community.

plant sharing

Postby hairycarrot on Tue Aug 05, 2008 10:16 am

I want to start a garden distribution group next summer.

It's much cheaper to grow tomatoes than buy them (like other foods) but when you get the plants many of them come in packs of four. Four is too many for some plants.

I'd like to group buy some plants with people to have more variety, but not excess food.

Anyone interested? Let me know and I'll email you in the spring when I'm about to go to the nursery.

I'm always willing to share. I have a medium sized garden, but I always end up buying too many plants.

Right now I'm growing:
tomatoes
zucchini
cucumbers
eggplants
onions
red lettuce
sweet potatoes
banana peppers
green peppers
jalapeno peppers

and nearly every kind of herb....lol. It's awesome that I don't need to buy veggies in the summer!

Ohh yippee!! This is really exciting...

There is this awesome farm down in West Virginia that grows hardy "idiot proof" plants: http://www.sunfarm.com/

They sell larger lots cheaper, and I was thinking that I'd like to do that, but was worried about how many plants I'd end up with... If anyone would like to split something with me, I can probably do that next year.

That's great. There's a place in etna that I like, too.

We can get together as a group next spring and split up some plants.
I do not need 6 cucumber plants next year.

Please count me in next spring as well! I always plant a rather large garden but also often end up with too many of each plant. When I buy seeds for heirloom veggies I often also have extra seeds that I'd love to share.

Also, I have a huge herb and perennial garden and would be happy to share free "extra" plants that spring up. (pun not intended, but made me smile)

I would love any herbs. :) We cook a lot and I hate spending so much on the stuff in the grocery store...

Next spring, I will definitely let you know when the herb plants start coming up. If you want, you can even come visit my garden and take home as much as you can use.

I have rhubarb coming out my ears, if anyone has a particular hankering for it. The house I moved into last year has 18 (!) plants in the backyard, a few of which are large enough to cultivate though I haven't done it before. This year's harvest is dwindling but there's still a few stalks to go around, if you don't mind chopping out the bug's nibbles.

Oh, and a few horseradish plants that I wouldn't mind giving away, apparently it grows like crazy and I just don't eat that much horseradish...
